Leadership from the Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services Department visited A. Maceo New Tech High School on Monday to present the cafeteria team with the Heart of Child Nutrition Award. The award celebrates cafeteria staff that go above and beyond to provide an exceptional food experience to students. The cafeteria staff at A. Maceo New Tech High School have been serving up nutritious meals to Dallas ISD students for decades, which is exemplified through their endless pursuit of excellence. Two years ago, Mayor Mike Rawlings started an effort in Dallas to combat the summer slide and give students a tangible pathway to a career. Nancy Bernardino, the principal of Dallas ISD’s Solar Preparatory School for Girls, was awarded the $20,000 Credit Union of Texas’ William H. Cotton scholarship. The scholarship honors William H. Cotton, a Dallas ISD and credit union trailblazer, and is open to all Dallas ISD employees who wish to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree or certification. Cotton retired as an associate superintendent for Dallas Independent School District and as a board officer for credit union of Texas. “Mr. C,” as he was affectionately known, began his career at Dallas ISD in 1957 as a teacher at Colonial Elementary School. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition has selected Sharon Foster of James Bowie Elementary to receive a 2016 President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Community Leadership Award. Seven Dallas ISD seniors have been named 2016 Gates Millennium Scholars, which is one of the nation’s most prestigious scholarships. The Gates Millennium Scholarship will cover all college-related costs for the seven students at the university or college of their choosing. The scholarship will also cover tuition for select graduate school programs, if the students choose to attend.
