U.S. News & World Report has named the School for the Talented and Gifted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center (TAG) as the best high school in the nation for the fifth consecutive year. TAG was joined in the top 10 of the annual rankings by the School for Science and Engineering, which earned the No. 4 spot. Teachers looking to explore some of the more innovative options in Dallas ISD are invited to the Public Choice School hiring event set for 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Alfred J. Loos Field House. This will be a smaller, more targeted hiring event geared toward any campus that falls under the district’s Public School Choice umbrella. Students brought their own flavor of awareness to the serious issue of bullying thanks to the district’s annual anti-bullying campaign. Sponsored by the Dallas ISD Counseling Services, students participated in a poster and video contest to empower students to encourage others to take a stand to end bullying. Dallas ISD officials joined the Dallas County Community College District at Eastfield College this week to announce the expansion of the Dallas ISD early college high school model. Starting Fall 2016, Dallas ISD will add eight new collegiate academies with the support of DCCCD to offer up to 60 hours of college credit at no cost to the student. Dallas ISD is providing summer enrichment camps through its Summer Achievers Academy, a Dallas ISD partnership with Dallas City of Learning and Big Thought. Summer Achievers is a tuition-free, full day enrichment summer camp designed to provide creative, extra-curricular opportunities to district students to support their interests beyond the traditional classroom setting. Students accepted to the program are eligible for tuition from their home campuses and will receive free breakfast, lunch and dinner. Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy teacher William Adkins is among the 50 teachers in 27 states and the District of Columbia awarded the professional development grants by the Institute of International Education and American Institute for Foreign Study Foundation in recognition of his outstanding work. Adkins is the only teacher within the Dallas Independent School District,to receive national recognition for successfully integrating global perspectives and exchanges into his classroom. Kassandra Castañeda, a fourth-grader at Frank Guzick Elementary School in Dallas, is this year’s Best of Show winner in Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) 2016 Student Art Contest. Castañeda’s winning artwork themed “DART to discovery” will be recognized as the best of more than 2,200 entries at a Thursday, April 28, ceremony to be held at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) at 6 p.m. The artwork will be displayed on the side of a DART bus traveling across the agency’s 13-city service area through September. Robotics teams from Winnetka Elementary and Emmett J. Conrad High have advanced to the world championship competitions of their respective grade levels. Winnetka will represent the Dallas Independent School District in the world championships in Louisville, Ky., the week of April 18, competing against 150 elementary school teams from across the world. Meanwhile, Conrad’s Robochargers team is heading to the world championship in St. Louis in late April to compete against 300 other teams from other countries.
