Dallas ISD’s annual Summer Dance Intensive will culminate on Saturday, June 25, with a recital showcasing the skills students have learned and refined during the two-week camp. Students focus on a particular style of dance: Ballet, Contemporary/Modern, Hip Hop, Jazz and Latin styles. The camp is called “ intensive” because it packs in nearly a year’s worth of instruction and practice into 12 days. Students apply to participate in the program and are chosen after auditions. Nearly 800 students from Dallas ISD’s seven new collegiate academies and Pathways to Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) got first-hand college experience at a two-week summer boot camp. The Texas Success Initiative boot camp saw the students visit the respective college campus they will attend as students in Dallas ISD’s new collegiate academies. The collegiate academies and P-TECH will let students, at no cost to them, earn up to 60 hours of college credit or an associate degree while still in high school. The Stars On The Rise scholarship fund, the annual scholarship drive of The Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GDHCC) and its many partners in the corporate and education sectors, is awarding $2,544,050.81 in scholarships to 296 graduating seniors from North Texas this year. During the last 33 years, the fund has given more than $32.5 million in scholarships to almost 3,800 students. Preliminary results show Dustin Marshall won the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees runoff election on Saturday for District 2. Marshall, a businessman, fills the seat vacated by Mike Morath, who was appointed to become the state’s education commissioner. A program aiming to help promote a love of fresh fruit and vegetables was the backdrop to officially kickoff the Summer Meals program at Dallas ISD. Just in the second week of the program, students in the Summer Sprouts class at Balch Springs Middle School had cooked and sampled a few recipes with fresh items from the school’s garden. On Tuesday, June 14, students shared fresh Texas peaches and also a simple, low-sugar peach sorbet.
