The Nick Cannon Foundation, in collaboration with Dallas ISD’s Career and Technical Education Program and JPMorgan Chase and Co., have announced the launch of a new competition for Dallas youth called “America’s Teen Mogul (ATM) Summit and Student Business Plan Competition.” Cannon announced the launch of the competition on Monday, Oct. 10, at Conrad High School. A Lincoln High School graduate has shot over adversity to become one of nine finalists for the NCAA 2016 Woman of the Year Award. Cameasha Turner graduated as the valedictorian at Lincoln in 2012 and went on to play basketball—and score a 4.0 GPA as a criminal justice major—at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is now in law school at Notre Dame. Turner has 11 siblings, and her dad has been incarcerated for most of her life. The answer to the question, “What’s in a name?” depends on who you’re asking. In the case of students at the newly named Piedmont G.L.O.B.A.L.  Academy, the answer is “a lot.” Students and community members in the Piedmont neighborhood in Pleasant Grove gathered at the former John B. Hood Middle School on Oct. 6 to celebrate the school’s new name and academic focus. The celebration was the culmination of more than six months of effort. The African American Success Initiative partnered with Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Turn Around Agenda to send 100 student athletes to Eastfield College to view a powerful documentary on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The goal of the documentary, “Direct Your Future,” is to inspire young men to let nothing stop them from their bright futures. Dallas ISD Trustee Joyce Foreman joined 34 other school board members from across Texas September 22-24 at the kickoff session of the Leadership TASB class of 2017. Selected by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the group is participating in a yearlong education leadership study program. These trustees represent school districts of all sizes, with student populations of 1,000 to 159,000, and reflect a similar range of property wealth. Participants who complete all required elements of the study will graduate next year by earning Master Trustee status. This is the highest designation recognized by TASB. Dallas ISD’s Principal for a Day got off to a great start on Tuesday! The event provides community and business leaders with a behind-the-scenes look at the local education system. Dallas Regional Chamber and Capital One help sponsor the annual event that this year sees more than 200 volunteers leading schools across the district. The Principals For a Day have the opportunity to shadow local principals, meet with students, read to classes, attend student performances, and participate in a number of other activities that make up a typical school day.
