Thursday was a special day for the cafeteria staff at Henry B. Gonzales Elementary. A surprise assembly in the school’s auditorium was put together by Principal Juan Cordoba and staff to showcase their true appreciation of all the cafeteria staff’s hard work and dedication. Dallas ISD so far has accepted 982 students into its seven new collegiate academies and P-TECH, a specialized early college high school in Seagoville, opening next year that are often described as “game changers.” More than 1,950 students have applied for the approximately 1,000 seats available next year at the collegiate academies and P-TECH. Spending a day in the life of a health professional offers students a unique opportunity to learn about their chosen profession before entering college. Thanks to a partnership with local health providers, students at the School of Health Professions at Townview Center are gaining practical experience through shadowing and internships. “I go to various stations throughout the hospitals. Representatives from MoneyGram stopped by Dallas ISD’s James Hogg Elementary on Tuesday, May 3, to present a donation that will help provide books to school libraries across the district. The $20,000 donation to First Book was exciting, but students were really pumped about meeting two players from the FC Dallas professional soccer team – midfielder Victor Ulloa and goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez. Deloitte LLP, The Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA), and United Way yesterday honored the recipients of the 2016 Deloitte/NTPGA Fairway to Success Scholarships. Six Dallas ISD students were awarded and joined the 32 previous recipients. Each student will receive a $20,000 scholarship towards their continuing education. The recipients were honored at a breakfast on May 2 at Lakewood Country Club. Guests include City of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and representatives from Deloitte, the NTPGA, and United Way. Established in 2007, the Fairway to Success Program annually awards scholarships to students based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community involvement and financial need.
