Dallas ISD high school girls learned firefighting and life lessons at Camp LADDER, a one-day and one-night camp hosted by the Dallas Fire Department. The core of the program is to teach leadership skills and self confidence. On Thursday, Dec. 8, Dallas ISD will hold a bid preview session to provide information to construction firms interested in submitting bids for work related to the 2015 Bond Program. The meeting will feature an overview of the projects in the first phase of the $1.6 bond program and explain the competitive bidding process. Holmes Humanities/Communications Academy who spent part of their summer at Space Camp attended a luncheon on Nov. 9 to thank the law firm Fish & Richardson for paying for their adventure. Fish & Richardson provided a scholarship so students Bryce Brown, Caleb Simmons, and Francisco Silva could attend the six-day camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Alabama. The chess club at Martin Luther King Jr. Learning Center didn’t have many expectations going into the recent districtwide elementary school chess tournament. Only two of the students on the team had played chess before this school year. Individuals interested in attending the Veterans and Spouses Career Expo are encouraged to register online in order to take advantage of the offerings. The expo, which is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at W.H. Adamson High School, will give veterans and their families a chance to learn about various employment opportunities in Dallas ISD. Dallas ISD middle school students and their parents are invited to an Early College High School Expo to showcase the program, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 12, at Eastfield College. Students across the district are invited to learn more about the programs partnering with the college at Bryan Adams, Spruce, Samuell and Seagoville high schools. Twenty-five Dallas ISD students advance as semifinalists in the 25th Annual Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition as they spoke to the theme, “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?” Each of the students wrote original essays and competed at the campus level for the opportunity to represent their school in the districtwide competition. The First Annual Chili Cook Off kicked off at F.D. Roosevelt High School, where three Dallas ISD Culinary schools showed off their chili. “We are doing this to encourage students to come out and socialize with people from other campuses,” said Sarah Lewis, culinary and nutrition teacher at Roosevelt. Roosevelt High School ended up taking first place in the cook off.
Students at Dallas ISD’s Frank Guzick Elementary experienced the political process of voting during a presidential mock election at their school. Students from Pre-K through 5th grade voted for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. “It is very important for our students to know their right to vote,” said Principal Adreana Davis. “It’s also important for our students to understand when selecting a candidate that they choose one who best represents them and their family and values.”
