Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings recognized Preston Hollow Elementary at a recent UNICEF gala for helping raise money for a water filtration system for a small village in Africa. Preston Hollow students wore UNICEF Kid Power Bands, which are similar to fit bits, and racked up points by taking steps. Those points translated into donated dollars for the water filtration system. The African American Success Initiative has partnered with local Dallas county judges who created a program called Pipeline to Possibilities. The goal is to educate students on various aspects of the justice system. Schools across Dallas ISD honored the legacy of late children’s author Dr. Seuss on Thursday, March 2, which marked what would have been his 113th birthday. Volunteers visited campuses to read to students and help with Seuss-themed activities. At Paul Dunbar Elementary School, guests from Baylor, Scott & White and Aramark visited the school Thursday morning to read to students. Some staff members dressed as The Cat in the Hat, a favorite Seuss character. At Roger Q. The Trinity Chapter of The Links, Inc. is proud to announce the celebration of its 10th Anniversary of its signature “Diamonds and Sneakers” Gala. The Gala will be held March 4 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel at 6 p.m. The evening of diamonds and sneakers will include dinner and dancing with the popular David White Band. The gala supports an enrichment program developed by the Trinity Links in 2000 for Dallas Independent School District elementary and middle school girls called SoSMAART. The boys basketball teams at Madison, Lincoln and Skyline high schools are competing in the regional tournament later this week. The games with Dallas ISD teams scheduled for March 3 are: Madison High Schools v. Mount Vernon High School: 6 p.m. at Rockwall Heath High School Lincoln High School v. Paris High School: 8 p.m. at Texas A&M Commerce Skyline High School v. Dr. Cynthia Wilson, chief of staff for the Dallas Independent School District, announced this week she has accepted a position to work in a similar role for Houston ISD. Pamela Lear has been appointed as Dallas ISD’s new chief of staff, effective April 1. Lear has served Dallas ISD in various leadership capacities since 2012 and began her career with the district as director of High School Redesign. Her experience in education spans nearly 30 years, when beginning as a teacher in southern California. Four campuses have advanced to the next round in the NCAA’s Read to the Final Four® contest for Dallas Independent School District third-graders. The bracket style tournament mimics the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament schedule, with schools advancing based on how many minutes students read outside school hours. Since November, third-graders from across the district have been counting the number of minutes they read each day. The Final Four advanced from the Elite 8 round.
