The National Safety Council, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, presented Dallas ISD this week with the 2016 Our Driving Concern Texas Employer Traffic Safety Award. Dallas ISD’s safety driving program provides comprehensive screening, training and materials for drivers in the district. “Texas is a leader among states in many areas, but sadly it has the highest rate of fatal car crashes,” said Deborah A.P. More than 40 students at Dallas ISD’s Boude Storey Middle School and John Neely Bryan Elementary School will be able to focus a little better in class thanks to donated eyeglasses they received on Monday, Sept. 12. The donated glasses were made possible by a partnership between the Essilor Vision Foundation and Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities. Students from both schools received free vision screenings at an Aug. 17 back-to-school event where they also received donated school uniforms, free haircuts, free dental care and food to take home. The Junior League of Dallas celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Grants for Innovative Teaching program Sept. 7 by awarding 54 grants totaling $93,000 to Dallas ISD educators. The grant program funds innovative school and classroom projects proposed by district teachers and administrators. As soon as the chime rings, kindergarteners in Ms. Martinez’s class at Dan D. Rogers Elementary School close their eyes and take a long, deep breath. The deep breathing exercises are part of the school’s focus on social and emotional learning (SEL), a growing priority across Dallas ISD. And for Dan D. South Oak Cliff High School will host the first Prep U Super Saturday event of the 2016-2017 school year on September 10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents from throughout the South Oak Cliff pattern are encouraged to come out and take advantage of the available free resources. For the first time in the Dallas Independent School District history, pre-K enrollment has topped projections to serve more than 11,000 students. As of today, there are 11,175 prekindergarten students enrolled in Dallas ISD, and some continued pre-K growth is expected over the course of the 2016-2017 year. Dallas ISD’s Piedmont G.L.O.B.A.L. Academy conducted a 9/11 remembrance event on Friday, Sept. 9. The school’s Leadership Cadet Corps raised the flag – first at half staff to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The school’s choir sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Police Officer Fabio Hernandez also talked about what he felt that day in 2001. The school, formerly John B. Hood Middle School, has conducted similar events each year to commemorate the attacks, honor the victims and show the strength of the country as it moves forward.
