The Dallas ISD Teen Board helped about 200 high school students think more about finding their right path to pursue after high school. The Life Project, which was held Feb. 11 at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, was the first inaugural service project hosted by the Dallas ISD Teen Board. The event featured 30 presenters that included authors, graduate students, business owners, and organizations such as The Resource Center and the Dallas Red Foundation. The Junior Achievement Young Executive Society visited Dallas ISD’s Highland Meadows Elementary School recently. Guests from a variety of Dallas companies – including AT&T, Toyota, Southwest Airlines, Merrill Lynch and Bank of America – talked to students and taught financial literacy lessons tailored to each grade level. “Teaching is a hard job, this gives us a greater appreciation for what our teachers do,” said Stephen Myers of Southwest Airlines. “It allows us to make an impact in schools and inspire students.”

A teenager and his younger sister have spearheaded a project that has donated 1,000 trophies to 10 Dallas ISD schools to reward students for everything from academics to athletics. Adam Klein, now a high school student, was cleaning out his room in 2013 when he decided it was time to get rid of his seven trophies. After some brainstorming, he reached out to a few Dallas ISD schools to see if they would be interested in them. Students in Michelle Hodges’ kindergarten class at J.P. Starks Math Science and Technology Vanguard went above and beyond on an assignment considering “If I Were the Teacher.” The writing prompt encouraged them to write their own book on the subject, writing all the words and creating the accompanying artwork. “The students were looking forward to becoming authors and doing something they’ve never done before,” Hodges said. “All of the children are looking forward to writing their own story. Who knows? We might have one of the next famous authors and it started right here at J. P. Starks.”

Students at the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA) are ready for mentors, and the community is stepping up. IDEA, one of Dallas ISD’s five Personalized Learning campuses, is bringing students into the community, and the community into the school.
