Dallas County participated in a statewide butterfly release as part of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Stigma surrounding mental health issues is a significant barrier preventing children, youth and families from seeking treatment. By releasing butterflies, this symbolizes flight to freedom from stigma. More than 3,000 faux butterflies were released countywide.
Seventy graduating seniors at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School celebrated their “signing day” by publicly announcing on stage what college or university they will attend in the fall. Every student was accepted to a college or university. The annual Model United Nations conference brought together about 400 sixth-graders from 13 Dallas ISD campuses earlier this month at Ellis Davis Field House. Students conducted research on world cultures and also global issues beforehand so that they could serve as delegates from UN countries. Students focused on solutions to 10 issues relating to sustainability, including education, gender equality and health. The annual event is coordinated by the Dallas ISD Social Studies Department.
Students from Tom C. Gooch Elementary School represented Dallas ISD well at the culminating event of the Speeding to Read program on Tuesday, May 23, at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). It was the first year for Gooch to take part in the incentive-based, motorsport-themed reading program created by TMS to encourage elementary school students to read more books during the school year. Gooch was among 10 Dallas-Fort Worth area schools to participate in the program, along with Dallas ISD’s Nathan Adams Elementary School. Pipeline to Possibilities, which helped educate students on various aspects of the justice system, concluded on May 18. Students from Kimball and South Oak Cliff high schools participated in the closing ceremony at Mountain View College. Various college representatives, Mountain View College President Dr. Robert Garza, entrepreneurs and more attended the event. The African American Success Initiative partnered with local Dallas county judges to create the program. Hillcrest High School graduating senior Lisbet Tudon Velazquez’s goal has been to make her parents, who immigrated to the United States almost 20 years ago, proud. Velazquez has balanced great grades, a job, playing lute in the school band—and much more—while in high school. She even attended a physics camp over the summer where she decided she wants to become an an engineer. Velazquez is set to study petroleum engineering in the fall at the University of Texas in Austin. Given all of Velazquez’s accomplishments, it’s no surprise that her parents are very proud.

According to the Alliance’s website, the award is an honor given to showcase and acknowledge schools that have implemented changes to create healthier school environments.
