In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, Jennifer Chandler of US Trust, who had served as Principal for a Day (PFAD) at the School for Talented and Gifted, donated lunch for all 170 faculty and staff members at Towvniew Magnet Center this week. Meanwhile, two other PFAD participants, Cristy Ecton of Children’s Health and Kelly Proctor of Texas Instruments, donated gift cards for drawings.
Two elementary schools have danced their way into the ballroom dancing finals in Arlington later this month! Dancing Classrooms is a 20-lesson ballroom dancing program that was open to elementary schools. The ballroom dancing Colors of the Rainbow Semi-Finals saw fifth-graders from seven Dallas ISD elementary schools compete: Brashear, DeGoyler, Dunbar, Foster, Harry Stone, Holland, and Zaragosa elementary schools. Four Dallas ISD students competed in the Inaugural Mayor’s Cup on April 27, hosted by Mayor Mike Rawlings and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance. The topic for debate was to discuss how education vouchers leave the most needy students behind. Students debating in support of the statement were Kathy Nguyen, North Dallas High School; and Victor Peña, Thomas Jefferson High School. Debating against the statement were Ricardo Rodriguez, W.T. Students who were eighth-graders at Quintinilla Middle School in 2007 returned to the school May 2 to pick up and read letters they wrote to themselves 10 years ago. Some students cried; some students laughed; and many students did both. Bill Betzen started the School Time-Capsule Project at Quintanilla Middle School in 2005 while working at the school as a teacher. Betzen has since retired but remains active in Dallas ISD. Due to the overwhelmingly strong interest, Betzen said Quintinilla will have a second reunion on May 15 for those who still want to pick up their letters. The reunion will…
