The application window is open for current eighth-graders interested in attending a Dallas ISD collegiate academy. Students who attend a collegiate academy can earn up to 60 hours of college credit or an associate degree—at no cost to them—concurrently while earning a high school diploma. Dallas ISD launched seven collegiate academies and a P-TECH at existing high schools this school year. Trustee Jaime Resendez is leading the charge to make District 4 an outstanding team. Elected to the board in May of 2016, this graduate of Skyline High School represents Southeast Dallas, Seagoville and Balch Springs. Resendez is a U.S. Army combat veteran and attorney licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas and before the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Texas. Sierra Jones, a fifth-grader at Charles Rice Learning Center, today was named the top orator during the 25th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. She competed alongside seven other finalists at The Majestic Theatre. Jace Roberson, a fifth-grader at J.P. Starks Math, Science and Technology Vanguard, took second place. Asad King, a fourth-grader at William Brown Miller Elementary, took the third spot. Three Dallas ISD schools have been nominated for the national 2017 Blue Ribbon Schools award. The middle schools at both Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) and Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, as well as the Dallas Environmental Science Academy (DESA), are the Dallas ISD nominees.
