Travis Academy/Vanguard for the Talented and Gifted, is among the students being honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) for their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. Early voting starts May 30 for the runoff election for the District 2 trustee seat. Trustee Dustin Marshall and Lori Kirkpatrick are in the runoff for the seat that covers North and Near East Dallas. The School of Health Professions senior Tiara Choi has successfully completed the Sports Medicine curriculum and passed the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) personal trainer exam. She is the first student in Dallas ISD to become a certified personal trainer. This is the first year the school has offered this certification. In addition to the personal trainer certification, the school offers career certifications in Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, ECG Technician, Medical Office Assistant, Patient Care Technician, and Registered Dental Assistant. Dallas County participated in a statewide butterfly release as part of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Stigma surrounding mental health issues is a significant barrier preventing children, youth and families from seeking treatment. By releasing butterflies, this symbolizes flight to freedom from stigma. More than 3,000 faux butterflies were released countywide.

Seventy graduating seniors at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School celebrated their “signing day” by publicly announcing on stage what college or university they will attend in the fall. Every student was accepted to a college or university. The annual Model United Nations conference brought together about 400 sixth-graders from 13 Dallas ISD campuses earlier this month at Ellis Davis Field House. Students conducted research on world cultures and also global issues beforehand so that they could serve as delegates from UN countries. Students focused on solutions to 10 issues relating to sustainability, including education, gender equality and health. The annual event is coordinated by the Dallas ISD Social Studies Department.
