Helena isn’t only a great student, she’s a great teacher. The Woodrow Wilson High School junior teaches a computer coding class once a week at Mt. Auburn Elementary School. Her teaching revolves around a website she is developing, findvolunteerships.com, to help fellow high school students find community service projects. “It’s really beneficial for kids to learn coding from a young age, especially with the curriculum we’ve come up with to teach the students,” she said. “Because coding is something that’s so important in the present and the future, I think it will be a required curriculum in the coming years.” She…
Art students at Thomas Jefferson High School recently completed a project they will probably never forget. The Memory Project has art students render portraits of often forgotten orphans from struggling countries. After Laura Hanel, the school’s visual arts instructor, contacted the Memory Project, the class received images of 20 Bolivian children. The students then drew portraits of the 20 children. Dr. Shelia Brown is the 2016-2017 Magnet/School Choice Principal of the Year. She is the principal of the Rosie M. Collins Sorrells School of Education and Social Services at Townview Center. Brown grew up living in project housing in Arkansas, but would walk every day to her grandparents’ house in a middle-class African-American neighborhood. “I virtually lived in two worlds,” Brown said. “But each world taught me to do your very best, regardless of the situation. The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded Dallas Independent School District its Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for excellence in budget presentation during the 2016–2017 budget year. The MBA promotes and recognizes excellence in school budget presentation and enhances school business officials’ skills in developing, analyzing and presenting a school system budget. After a rigorous review by professional auditors, the award is conferred only on school districts that have met or exceeded the program’s stringent criteria. Dallas ISD also earned the MBA distinction for its budget presentation for 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

Dee-1, a rapper who went viral with his song about paying off his student loans, visited Charles A. Gill Elementary School to talk with students about financial literacy in a fun and engaging way. KPMG recently sponsored a Read to Succeed Book Fair at Onesimo Hernandez Elementary School. Each student had the opportunity to choose five books and enjoy some word games and snacks. Also, KPMG partners and staff members visited upper grade classrooms to talk about how important math is in their jobs. This book fair was in addition to many other gifts provided by KPMG this school year. KPMG has donated books for all students at 15 schools, distributed 5,000 at the district’s Read to Me event on March 4, and committed to an additional $35,000 for books to be distributed to all students enrolled in…
