Dallas ISD is now accepting nominations for students in first- through fifth-grade to be screened for the Dallas ISD Gifted and Talented Education Program. The nomination window is open Aug. 27–Sept. 7. Parents, guardians and community members may nominate students for consideration. Students may also nominate themselves. Information packets are available at local campuses from the school’s Gifted and Talented Education Program teacher. Students must be enrolled in Dallas ISD to be tested. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 23 unanimously approved up to $33.3 million in salary increases for eligible teachers, campus leaders and non-instructional staff. The district is able to fund the salary increases after receiving higher-than-expected revenue from property taxes. Built on the success of a “peace pantry” stocked with canned food that benefits students and their families at Woodrow Wilson High School, a new one has started this school year at nearby Geneva Heights Elementary School. Teachers help identify students whose families would benefit from a gift of food, and on Friday the students take home bags filled with food, prepared by volunteers. Dallas ISD administrators today thanked families for their patience as the district continues working through issues that have caused some bus routes to not operate as expected. Deputy Superintendent Scott Layne said while the on-time arrival rates are increasing daily, Dallas ISD is about 100 bus drivers short. As students returned to class on Monday, Aug. 20, Dallas ISD teachers were well prepared to start a great school year of learning, thanks in part to the district’s summer professional development opportunities. As part of the 2018 Summer Institute, Dallas ISD offered more than 1,730 sessions at four campuses for four weeks over the summer. From building positive classrooms to differentiating instruction in the digital age, teachers received the tools and learning needed to succeed in the classroom. A recent collaborative luncheon brought together Dallas ISD’s new Office of Racial Equity, Dallas Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation, and the City of Dallas’ Office of Equity and Human Rights to discuss equity issues. The Equity Luncheon was held at the Hall of State in Fair Park, and historical societies from several communities—Remembering Black Dallas, Dallas Mexican American Historical League, Dallas ISD’s American Indian Education Program, Dallas Jewish Historical Society—presented on their preservation, research and archival efforts. This was the first of many equity-focused collaborative events.
Una semana antes del inicio de clases, se reunieron las enfermeras del distrito para aprender diferentes maneras de detener un sangrado con un torniquete y gasa en situaciones de emergencia. Las enfermeras trabajaron en equipo para aprender cómo aplicar torniquetes, un dispositivo que detiene el flujo de la sangre y también, practicaron técnicas para empacar heridas abiertas con gasa (utilizando un simulador).
