A Class of 2018 graduate is one of the top two Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars in the state. Kimmy Chang, who gradated last May as the School of Science and Engineering’s (SEM) valedictorian, earned the State AP Scholar Award by scoring a 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP exams, and the highest average scores on the AP exams she took. More than 2,300 students and their parents attended the 2018 Dallas ISD Districtwide College Fair on Sept. 19 to learn about opportunities available after high school graduation. That attendance figure represents more than 1,800 Dallas ISD students, nearly 50 more who attend schools outside of Dallas ISD and the about 400 parents/guardians who also visited the fair. When they arrived, they were greeted by dozens of representatives from colleges, universities, trade schools and the military who were eager to share information about their institutions. Dallas ISD officials announced on Friday several interim leadership changes to ensure the district is positioned for continued significant progress. The position of Deputy Superintendent, which had been held by Israel Cordero prior to his resignation on Sept. 20, will become the Chief of Strategic Initiatives. Chicago tries to claim Ernie Banks as its own, and there’s no denying that the late baseball player known as “Mr. Cub” and “Mr. Sunshine” had a positive impact during his 18 years of professional play there and through his community involvement. But Banks was born and raised in Dallas, and on Thursday, that fact was commemorated in a special way. A statue of Banks was dedicated in front of the original building of Dallas ISD’s Booker T. North Dallas High School senior Heath Waffer still remembers his first day as a freshman. He’d never visited a high school before, so he thought it was “some big scary place.” He was notably terrified the first time he walked through the front door. A Dallas ISD middle school teacher has been named the New Teacher of the Year by the Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA). J.L. Long Middle School teacher Dayne Harris will be honored for his achievements in October at the TFLA Fall Conference. “The committee was impressed by the obvious dedication you have shown to your school, students, and community,” TFLA President Elect Stephanie Escobar wrote to Harris in a letter. “We are humbled and inspired by the excellence you have demonstrated during your years in world language education.”
