Dallas ISD veteran educators joined together at the 47th Annual National Alliance of Black School Educators conference held in Dallas this week to share lessons learned throughout their careers as leaders in the field of education. The group gathered at the Dining with Divas’ Denim and Diamonds Networking Mixer as the conference kicked off. The event recognized 11 women from across the country who have made a significant impact in education. The Dallas ISD Racial Equity Office and Language, Literacy, and Social Studies Department took a delegation of staff and students today to the State Capitol in Austin to provide public comment in support of the statewide implementation of Dallas ISD’s African-American Studies Course. After students from Trinidad “Trini” Garza Early College High School, New Tech High School at B.F. Growing up in in Kansas City, Dallas ISD Assistant Superintendent Usamah Rodgers still remembers enjoying participating in the free after-school program at the Boys and Girls Club. As a result, Rodgers said it’s an easy decision to support causes such as the Dallas ISD United Way Giving Campaign, which aims to fundraise $190,000 for the nonprofit that provides programs and services that help district students and families. A performance by students from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts opened up the annual KPMG Family for Literacy Market Day for Literacy fundraising luncheon. Students from Leonides Gonzalez Cigarroa M.D. Elementary School and Principal Douglas Burak shared their gratitude for the organization’s continued support of the school. Founded in 2008, the program promotes literacy by providing new books for students at dozens of Dallas ISD schools and programs during the year. KPMG has also supported district students and schools in other ways through the years.

After piloting an elementary debate initiative last year with 85 students from 13 elementary schools, the Dallas ISD Student Activities Department has implemented a districtwide debate program that saw more than 300 fifth-graders recently attend a workshop at Conrad High School. With 44 schools in attendance, the workshop introduced the elementary students to debate terms, purpose and format. Students from Woodrow Wilson and W. W. Samuell high schools kicked off Monday’s Greater Dallas Veterans Day Parade.
