As the Dallas ISD Police Department officer assigned to Thomas J. Rusk Middle School, Officer Walter Gunn believes that building relationships with students is the most vital part of this job. Three Dallas ISD schools are among only 26 in Texas nominated for the 2020 National Blue Ribbon School award. Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy, Dr. Wright L. Lassiter Early College High School, and Edward Titche Elementary School are the district nominees. The U.S. Department of Education awards the Blue Ribbon recognition to schools where students perform at very high levels or where exemplary progress is being made toward closing achievement gaps. High school students are invited to a free SAT boot camp happening later this month. The boot camps are happening on Feb. 22 and 29 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at: • Skyline High School • Molina High School • Townview Center • Woodrow Wilson High School • Kimball High School • Conrad High School • White High School • Spruce High School. Dallas ISD’s Reading and Language Arts Department will give away over 10,000 books at Read for Me on March 7. Read for Me is an interactive, multi-cultural literacy experience designed to instill a love for books and reading in parents, students, and community members. Attendees will also enjoy an International Festival celebrating diverse cultures through activities, tasty snacks, and performances.  This year’s theme is Stories from Around the World. We encourage all Dallas ISD elementary students and their families to attend the 2020 African American Read-In on Saturday, Feb. 22! The Racial Equity Office (REO) will host this cultural event in collaboration with three Dallas ISD trustees. The 2020 African American Read-In is set to take place at Justin F. Twenty-five Dallas ISD gifted/talented program teachers were chosen to take part in a makerspace cohort specifically geared towards gifted/talented education. Teachers began their learning in May when they explored the Dallas Makerspace for adults located in Carrollton. From there, they met with a panel of makerspace experts from around the Dallas area to gather information and inspiration on designing their very only makerspace in their classrooms. All cohort teachers went through an intensive two-day summer training where they defined their vision and goals, chose a program structure, and prepared for inclusivity while using the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) curriculum.…

Joseph Contreras is a Lead Dyslexia Evaluator who has partnered with parents and professionals in Dallas ISD for over 18 years to identify students with dyslexia and help them find success. For his great work, the Dallas International Dyslexia Association chose Contreras to receive the 2020 Excellence in Education Award. He was recently recognized at Dallas IDA’s 2020 Regional Conference on Feb. 7.
