As an industry partner with the South Oak Cliff High School P-TECH, PepsiCo and Frito-Lay are showing students great potential opportunities available to them after high school. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay have developed and implemented programming with the SOC P-TECH that covers careers, college, communication, leadership, collaboration, time management, public speaking, resumes and interviewing. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay have hosted college and career fairs where more than 150 associates mentored 300 students by sharing their college experiences. Students at W.W. Bushman Elementary School looked on in amazement as a dairy farm instructor demonstrated how to milk a cow. The activity was part of Dallas ISD’s celebration of National School Breakfast Week, which recognizes the importance of starting a day with a healthy meal. The dairy farmer also described how milk goes from the farm to consumer and answered a variety of questions from students. H‑E‑B chose Dallas ISD as a finalist for the statewide 2020 H-E-B Excellence in Education District Awards. For the last 19 years, the supermarket chain based in San Antonio has honored outstanding professionals from Texas public schools. Eight school districts and five early childhood facilities have been selected as finalists for the retailer’s 19th-annual Excellence in Education Awards program. The Dallas ISD African American Read-In provided families with a great time on Feb. 22! The Racial Equity Office (REO) hosted this cultural event in collaboration with three Dallas ISD trustees. The 2020 African American Read-In took place at Justin F. Kimball High School. Each student received a free bag of books to build their home library, and school bus transportation and lunch were provided for elementary school students. The award provides an opportunity to publicly applaud Dallas ISD teachers and to reward those who have demonstrated excellence in their profession by “going the extra mile.” Applications may be submitted by Dallas ISD teachers on their own behalf or by other individuals on behalf of a teacher. Fifth-graders from Frank Guzick Elementary traveled to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip on Feb. 20 to experience what they are learning in social studies and science. Students visited the Texas State Capitol in Austin and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown.
