Representatives from several Dallas ISD departments will be on site at Skyline High School to speak with families and answer questions on Wednesday, April 7. The staff will be available outside the school during the curbside meal pick-up times, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The visit to Skyline is part of an outreach effort by the Parent Advocacy and Support Services to reach families inside their communities and address their needs. Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center implemented a military-like program where every student can strive to become a campus role-model and earn their stripes. SLAC – which stands for service, leadership, academics and courage – teaches accountability and discipline to every student at the school through a performance-based rank structure and introduces the students to various career choices. “I believe that the SLAC Program has decreased the amount of referrals and suspensions in our campus, and also gives recognition to the students who are doing good,” Myles said. Students and staff at Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary kicked off spring break with a campus-wide Catapult Design Challenge. Rebecca Ajuluchukwu, a campus instructional coach, is one of the main organizers of this project. Before working at Hawthorne Elementary, she taught middle school and organized a similar activity for her students. March is Social Work Appreciation Month, and it’s a time to thank the outstanding social workers in Dallas ISD who help families every day. Dallas ISD Mental Health Services has over 25 social workers who serve as licensed mental health clinicians, and the Dallas ISD Special Education Department has five social workers who assist families. Dallas County Elections Administrator Michael Scarpello reminds eligible voters that the registration deadline for the Saturday, May 1, 2021 Joint Election is Thursday, April 1, 2021. In order to accept any last minute registrations, the Elections Department will extend its normal hours to 7:00 am to 7:00 pm the week of March 29, 2021.
