After experiencing virtual learning for almost an entire school year, fifth graders got to argue the pros and cons of online learning in the Dallas ISD Virtual Elementary Debate Tournament recently. Participating in teams, 129 students from 19 schools debated the resolution: Online learning is better than in-person learning. Sudie L. Williams Talented & Gifted Academy and William B. Travis Academy for the Academically Talented & Gifted tied for first place overall in the debate tournament. Thanks to the P-TECH program, more than 10 percent of Dallas ISD seniors are expected to graduate this year with a high school diploma and an associate degree. As part of our ongoing commitment to educate all students, this spring, Dallas ISD discovered a backlog of about 2,000 unprocessed evaluations and referrals for Special Education services. The program is one of the district’s fastest growing areas, and we are aligning resources to work through this issue and assure that referrals and evaluations are conducted as quickly and thoroughly as possible, and that students receive the services they need. Two virtual workshops gave families and stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the district’s goal and support plan to eliminate suspensions in the 2021–2022 school year, while still having any serious infraction go through the disciplinary alternative education program. All students returning to Dallas ISD next school year can keep their district-issued computing device over the summer. This includes district-issued iPads, Chromebooks, and laptops. Graduating seniors (excluding summer program participants) and students withdrawing from Dallas ISD should return their device to their home school or nearest Technology Support Center by June 18. Graduating seniors who participate in the summer program should return their device by July 1.
