School board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools and serve as a link between the community and classroom. Trustees serve as unpaid volunteers. Since December, the state’s front-line workers—including Dallas ISD nurses—have been receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in the first phase of immunizations (Phase 1A), according to state and county eligibility guidelines. To safeguard district staff, Dallas ISD is working with Dallas County Health and Human Services and Parkland Hospital to secure vaccines for staff who are eligible for vaccination in Phase 1B to include individuals who are 65+ and those affected by serious chronic medical conditions. The new Dallas ISD school operating in partnership with Paul Quinn College is now accepting applications for students entering sixth- and seventh-grade next school year.  Families can apply by visiting www.dallasisd.org/choosedallasisd and filling out the online application. A partnership with Paul Quinn College will provide rigorous programs and more school choice options for Southern Dallas students. The RoboTAG team from the School for the Talented and Gifted won first place in the State Farm Exhibit and Interview Award in the 2020 Texas BEST and UIL Robotics State Championships! The fifth annual UIL State Championship – BEST Robotics Division was held virtually Nov. 30–Dec. 12. The championship was open to high school teams competing in BEST Robotics who are members of Texas’ University Interscholastic League (UIL). WFAA reports how two veteran Dallas Independent School District teachers took part in Moderna’s successful COVID-19 vaccine trials, and even recruited some colleagues to join them. Diane Birdwell and Vickie Tillery at Bryan Adams High School said the wanted to particpate in the vaccine trial because they wanted to make a difference. Watch the full story here.

The Board of Trustees has approved a daily incentive for substitutes to address lower substitute fill rates that are a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The additional $20 daily incentive is designed to increase fill rates and provide support to campuses during the spring semester. The $20-per-day incentive will be paid on top of any other incentives for substitutes. Substitutes will continue to receive the additional incentive of $5 for working on Mondays and $10 for working on Fridays. Substitutes working a full day of service at an ACE campus will also continue to receive the ACE $10-per-day incentive.…
