For 19 years, Tara Chapman taught English in Dallas ISD – at Hillcrest and Booker T. Washington high schools. But as the mother of children with disabilities, including an adult son with autism, she saw up close what a difference special education teachers can make in students’ lives. Next fall, Dallas ISD will launch iLearn Virtual School, a standalone virtual school offering anytime, self-paced instruction for students in grades 3 through 9, and ultimately grades K-12. We have a winner! Tristan Whitfield, a fifth grader at Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center, claimed first place Friday in Dallas ISD’s 30th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition. Tristan and seven other fourth and fifth graders competed in the finals of the competition, which is co-sponsored each year by the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP and the school district. Michael Hinojosa, superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD), announced today he will close out his 13-year tenure as superintendent of the nation’s 16th largest school district, effective December 2022. David Newhouse, an AP Human Geography teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School, is one of 78 educators to receive the American Geographical Society’s 2021 Educator GeoBoost Grant. The grants are designed to enhance geographic learning among Advanced Placement Human Geography students.  Newhouse’s $300 award will fund the Albert.io app for exam study. As COVID-19 continues to be a challenge for our students and staff, there are a number of questions around the isolation and quarantine period. Dallas ISD will adhere to the five-day isolation period for anyone who tests positive. If you are considered a close contact of someone who tests positive and are unvaccinated, you must also quarantine for the five-day period. Those who are fully vaccinated and exposed to someone who is COVID positive are not required to quarantine if they are not showing symptoms.
