Dallas ISD is offering a free summer learning experience to students that, if offered by another provider, would likely cost families at least $300. “This is an outstanding opportunity for students that won’t cost their parents a penny,” said Sharla Hudspeth, executive director for Dallas ISD Extracurricular and Extended Learning Opportunities. The PreK–8 Summer Cool Camp is designed to meet the needs of the whole child. Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union named Akash Patel, a Spanish teacher at Ignite Middle School, as its 2021 Appreciated Teacher of the Year. The award comes with a $2,500 grand prize, which was given to Patel in his classroom. In addition to being an outstanding teacher, Patel also founded Happy World Foundation, a global citizenship nonprofit that connects educators around the world.

Because Dallas ISD offers free meals to all its students, all families are eligible to receive the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT), a one-time benefit provided by the State of Texas for eligible families to buy food. After experiencing virtual learning for almost an entire school year, fifth graders got to argue the pros and cons of online learning in the Dallas ISD Virtual Elementary Debate Tournament recently. Participating in teams, 129 students from 19 schools debated the resolution: Online learning is better than in-person learning. Sudie L. Williams Talented & Gifted Academy and William B. Travis Academy for the Academically Talented & Gifted tied for first place overall in the debate tournament. Thanks to the P-TECH program, more than 10 percent of Dallas ISD seniors are expected to graduate this year with a high school diploma and an associate degree.
