To foster good sportsmanship and character development within its athletics community, Dallas ISD introduced the “Stop, Think, & Choose” campaign which promotes respect among student-athletes and fans.
A collaboration between the district’s Culture and Belonging and the Athletics departments, the campaign’s message is simple: students are urged to pause (stop), consider the consequences of their actions (think), and then make a positive choice (choose).
“The Stop, Think, & Choose campaign is a proactive measure to create a healthier, more positive environment in our athletics culture,” said Elena Bates, executive director of High School Transformation. “It reinforces the idea that success in sports isn’t just about winning games; it’s also about demonstrating respect, integrity, and empathy, which are essential qualities for our student-athletes as they grow into responsible adults.”
Public announcements and video board graphics at athletic events will remind students and spectators of the importance of good sportsmanship. On campuses, the campaign is being integrated into student-athlete meetings, morning announcements, and pep rallies. Coaches are actively encouraging the use of the “Stop, Think, & Choose” method, not just during games, but in everyday interactions as well.
“We aim to create an atmosphere where athletes are not only celebrated for their physical abilities but also for their character and the way they uplift others,” Bates said. “By encouraging good sportsmanship, we are laying the foundation for a more inclusive and supportive athletic environment that extends beyond the playing field and into the broader school community.
