Event at Marcus Elementary officially kicks off free summer meal program

Principal Holly Wallace and Community Liaison Ruth Lara invited a few friends over for lunch on Tuesday, June 13. The response was a packed cafeteria at Dallas ISD’s Herbert Marcus Elementary School and a bunch of happy tummies.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Wallace said, surveying the brimming cafeteria. “It’s a good thing.”

The occasion helped officially kick off the Healthy Summer Meals for Kids program, which features more than 200 district schools and other locations throughout the city offer free breakfast and/or lunch to youth ages 18 and under while school is out of session.

In addition to the meals provided by Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services, families could taste a variety of fresh foods not on the lunch menu, learn about incorporating healthy eating and exercise into their lives and get food to take home from the North Texas Food Bank.
