Recently, the second VEX IQ Adaptive Robotics Scrimmage was coordinated by the Dallas ISD STEM, Student Activities and Special Education departments.

Competing were robotics teams from the Young Women’s STEAM Academy at Balch Springs, Billy Earl Dade Middle School, W.H. Gaston Middle School, J.L. Long Middle School and Sunset High School.

Stacy Venson, director of Dallas ISD Curriculum & Instruction, said that the robotics competition benefits students by teaching them social skills, problem-solving skills, creativity, innovative thinking and job skills relating to their vocational goals.

In February, the first scrimmage brought the teams together to compete. The program is part of an effort to meet a district goal of having every student engage in a co-curricular or extra-curricular activity.

The first-ever scrimmage of its kind in the district was conducted in February.
