From strings to STEM, summer learning options abound

As the school year and the rigor of daily classes wane, Dallas ISD is gearing up to keep students learning with a touch of fun.

Families have many programs from which to choose to engage students in summer learning. There’s no need for students to spend all day sitting in the house watching TV, playing video games and losing hard-earned knowledge gained from the just-finished school year. Instead, students can participate in hands-on science projects and explore careers in STEM, expand their musical talents at band or strings camp, or have fun as they learn and practice their English language or math skills.

The summer programs range from specially designed summer learning experiences for American Indian students to classes for girls who want to pursue careers in physics and other sciences. Programs will be offered at schools across the district. Many are free of charge, and some offer free breakfast, lunch and transportation.

Parents can see program details on the attached list of summer enrichment opportunities, and need to act fast to ensure availability at preferred locations since most programs begin within days of the close of regular classes. In most instances, campus counselors have applications and full details about enrichment programs.

Parents can download and review the specific program flyers and consult the listed contacts or the counselor at their child’s school with specific questions.
