When she moves on from William B. Travis Academy/Vanguard in two weeks, eighth-grader Phoebe Fauss will leaf behind a green legacy at the school: the “Phoebe Fauss Salad Bar.” Fauss worked with the Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services Department and campus leadership to bring a salad bar to the school. The salad bar debuted at the school on May 15 and more than 40 students loaded their plates with fresh greens and vegetables on the first day.
Dallas ISD recently celebrated Fresh Attitude Week to showcase how fresh fruits and vegetables are served in schools. Harllee Early Childhood Center hosted a highlight of the week, with aquaponics farmer Geoff Gray from Primal Gardens and Dallas ISD Executive Chef Trina Nelson demonstrating how fresh fruits and vegetables can be used for healthy school meals. The All-Pro Dad Initiative is closing the school year with a “Supper” Bowl Party on May 23 at the SMU Football Ford Stadium, 6425 Boaz Lane. Through the initiative, dads and father figures agree to get more engaged in their children’s lives by adopting a One + One + One strategy straight from the Dallas ISD Dads for Kids playbook. Conn’s HomePlus partnered with Hewlett Packard (HP) and Dallas Cowboys safety Kavon Frazier to gift 120 laptops to four Dallas ISD schools. Students had the opportunity to meet and engage with Conn’s HomePlus CEO Norm Miller and Frazier as they made surprise visits to all four campuses to personally present the laptops. Miller hopes the donation will help students strive to do better in school, and he encouraged the students to always put their education first. “Hopefully these laptops will assist in your education efforts and you can use them to make it happen,” said Miller.
