The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees gave the administration the green light to hire a search firm to help find top candidates for the district’s hard-to-staff positions. The board approved the proposal in a 6-3 vote during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on August 28. Under the proposal, the district can allocate up to $300,000 during the next three years for these services. Additionally, the board voted to accept a grant increase (up to $50,000) for the Gates Next Gen Systems Initiative, Phase II. Two vehicle-related incidents this week near Dallas ISD campuses are a reminder to students and adults to be safe when traveling near schools. A crossing guard at Victor H. Hexter Elementary School was struck by a vehicle while on the job on Aug. 27 near Brookhurst Drive and NorthCliff Drive. No students were present at the time of the accident, but the crossing guard was significantly injured. Dora Rivas of the Dallas Independent School District’s Food and Child Nutrition Services will detail the benefits of the Breakfast in Schools program during testimony to the Texas Senate Education Committee at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the state capitol building in Austin. As executive director of the district’s nutrition program, Rivas has led the charge in the implementation of breakfast in schools.
