Daisy Rivera, a U.S. History and Mexican American Studies teacher at North Dallas High School, recently spoke to WFAA about the history of Cinco de Mayo. Rivera stressed the importance of approaching the holiday with understanding and respect. She explained the history around the battle of Puebla and its importance in United States history.  Rivera’s Mexican American Studies students decorated the campus for the holiday, and hosted a movie night for students. Dallas ISD’s newest Montessori campus, Prestonwood Montessori, will host a Family Mixer on Saturday, May 15,  9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.,  at the new campus located inside E.D. Walker Middle School,  5700 Wozencraft Drive in Dallas. The Family Mixer is an opportunity for prospective students and families to learn about all of the amazing educational opportunities available at the school, scheduled to open in August 2021 for Pre-K3  through 2nd grade. The Math Club at William B. Miller Elementary started in 2016 with 15 students being coached by Math teacher Elias Cabrera. Every year the school has participated in the TMSCA, Dallas ISD Invitational contests, as well as all the Math Olympiads. Club sessions are on Tuesdays and last two hours, from 3–5 p.m. In the TMSCA contests, the students usually reach the first positions in Number Sense, which consists of a test of only 10 minutes where students have to use mental calculations and shortcuts since the use of pencil and eraser is not allowed. Peter Morrissey, a 17-year educator in Dallas, teaches general education and English as a Second Language at Alex Sanger Preparatory School. A graduate of Texas State University, he works with teachers and the community to ensure that his campus provides a variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities for all students.
