The chess club at Martin Luther King Jr. Learning Center didn’t have many expectations going into the recent districtwide elementary school chess tournament. Only two of the students on the team had played chess before this school year. But, after learning and quickly improving at the game during the chess club, the team went on to win eight matches, including one player earning the silver medal. “I was just blown away at how quickly these kids have picked up the game, and how well they did at the tournament,” said Ryan Brown, a third-grade teacher and lead of the school’s…
Dallas ISD middle school students and their parents are invited to an Early College High School Expo to showcase the program, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 12, at Eastfield College. Students across the district are invited to learn more about the programs partnering with the college at Bryan Adams, Spruce, Samuell and Seagoville high schools. Students can earn up to 60 college credits – for free – while earning their high school diplomas. Register for the free event here. Eastfield College is located at 3737 Motley Drive in Mesquite.
Elias Palmitano, a senior at Bryan Adams High School, is teaching his classmates about the value of non-violence and self esteem after moving to Dallas three years ago from Argentina. Palmitano has started a No More Violence club at Bryan Adams to help promote positive character traits to fellow students. CW33 has named Palmitano a Class Act of the Week for his great work. The Dallas ISD’s Amazing Scholars Race, following the format of popular television series The Amazing Race, took place at A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School. Middle and high school scholars competed in a variety of team events that included challenging problems in mathematics, science, English, and social studies, coupled with some good old-fashioned physical fitness. While only some of the scholars emerged as victors, all seemed to relish the opportunity to participate in the day’s activities. The Advanced Academics team thanks Principal Choice and the A.
