Dallas ISD will send 24 teams to the Destination Imagination State Tournament set for April 7-9 in Lubbock. According to the Destination Imagination website, the program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament. The L. G. Pinkston Mighty Marching Band has been selected from thousands of bands across America to participate in the National Memorial Day Parade May 27 -29 in Washington D.C. In addition to representing Dallas ISD and the State of Texas, the Mighty Viking Band Members will attend a series of historic educational tours including the Ford Theater, the United States Holocaust Museum, and the Lincoln, Korean, Martin Luther King Jr., Vietnam, and National World War II Memorials. South Oak Cliff Collegiate Academy students participated in the 2017 Minority Student Day at the Microsoft Campus. The event was hosted by a Microsoft committee, Blacks at Microsoft, whose primary commitment is to continually reach out the external communities to enable broad access to technology to any person from any background. The goal of the event was to provide area high school and college students as well as interns from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds with information about the exciting tools, resources, and career opportunities available to them in high technology.
