Schools will be closed for Fair Days this month, so that students and staff may attend the State Fair of Texas. Elementary Fair Day is on Friday, Oct. 12. Secondary Fair Day is on Friday, Oct. 19. Students are off both days, but Oct. 12 is a staff development day for secondary staff, and Oct. 19 is a staff development day for elementary staff.

The 18th annual Dallas ISD Superintendent’s Scholarship Golf Classic was a rousing success, with the event selling out after a record number of teams participated on Oct. 1. Twice the number of teams that have participated in recent tournaments signed up for the 2018 event. One of the players was former Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Moses, who presided over the early golf tournaments. Through the Visual and Performing Arts Department, elementary students are given a unique opportunity to experience world class artistic performances every year in grades 2–5. In the 2017-2018 school year, 47,589 Dallas ISD students experienced an inspiring performance and exhibit. On Monday, Oct. 1, M.B. Henderson Elementary School—along with 10 community partners from the Federal Reserve Bank and four parent volunteers from the community—joined together in the library media center to read aloud to students from books written and/or illustrated by Hispanic Americans. This yearly event organized by librarian Ms. Dowell reinforced the importance of literacy as a skill that requires mastery, as well as showcased the cultural and literary contributions of Hispanic Americans to the development of the United States.
