Members of Everette L. DeGolyer Elementary School’s Class of 1967 recently reunited at the campus to recreate their sixth-grade class photo. “These alumni have great stories of DeGolyer’s impact on their school careers and how it shaped their lives as adults,” DeGolyer Elementary Principal Tara Mays said. “ All have fond memories and have helped impress upon me the reality of an elementary school’s duty to our scholars to be a loving, nurturing, and inclusive community. These wonderful people have become donors, friends, and even members of an annual football game each year.”
The Mayor’s Back to School Fair is Friday, Aug. 4, at the Centennial Building at Fair Park, and the event will once again provide a one-stop-shop complete with all the back-to-school basics. Parents and children can find everything they need to prepare for the school year – from free school supplies for Dallas schoolchildren (who meet eligibility requirements); to free health, dental and vision screenings; to immunizations and haircuts; plus the latest information on education, health and social services. As part of Capital One’s Future Edge DFW initiative, Capital One teamed up with NAF and the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) for the NAF Future Ready Lab pilot, an innovative internship concept designed to scale the quantity of meaningful internship experiences. The program gave 20 Dallas ISD high school students in NAF academies the opportunity to prepare for future careers. The internships lasted June 12–30. During this time, they developed ready-to-execute concepts for a large-scale community event for Capital One to organize in the local market later in the year. Six Dallas ISD teachers got the chance to work outside of their classrooms in a newly developed summer internship program. The district’s Human Capital Management (HCM) created the internship to benefit the teachers, but also use their perspective to refine several initiatives. The six teachers were chosen from nearly 400 applicants. Abby Mayer, who coordinated the project for HCM, said that the Central Office Leader Internship came from wanting to have insight from teachers on some of our major HCM initiatives such as New Teacher Support and Teacher Career Pathways, but also offer leadership opportunities to current educators allowing them…
