While most workers have spent the summer pursuing at least some rest and relaxation, it’s been just the opposite for hundreds of construction crews and maintenance workers toiling up to the last minute readying Dallas ISD schools. They’ve been racing the clock to complete projects before students pour back into the buildings on August 28. Their work has ranged from relatively modest jobs like paint and window installation to asbestos removal, roof repairs, and major classroom additions. Business education teacher Marcus Robinson expects to wow his students with a new tech tool when they report to his class at E.D. Walker Middle School this year. Robinson is one of hundreds of district teachers whose classrooms will be equipped with interactive touch screens provided by the district’s IT and Career and Technology departments. Each of the 23 collegiate academies are receiving 11 of the units funded by the 2015 Bond Program, and select campuses are receiving theirs compliments of the Career and Technology department. As a professional basketball player, Nancy Lieberman’s jersey number was 10. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, she visited Dallas ISD’s Robert T. Hill Middle School to ask students to commit to working at least 10 hours of community service during the next year. In return, students from Hill and Gaston middle schools and Bryan Adams High School received one of about 500 new backpacks filled with supplies from Nancy Lieberman Charities. Volunteering in Dallas ISD is a great way to make a difference and help students and schools thrive.
