Young ladies at Lincoln High School met with mentors and received powerful pep talks at the “Breakfast With A Bunch of Beauties” event presented by the Be You Tiful Girls, Trustee Bernadette Nutall and sponsored by Urban Specialists. The event connected students with mentors and provided information on how to prepare for success physically, spiritually and emotionally. Students also learned how to dress for job interviews and received practical advice on how to stand out in the business world.

High School students from several NAF-Dallas ISD engineering, finance, and hospitality & tourism academies recently met with Verizon’s engineering leadership team to demo their senior projects and share business product ideas, shark tank-style. Students received immediate on-the-spot coaching from Verizon engineers, the friendly sharks, to take their concept to the next level. Additionally, students heard from Verizon Chief Network Engineering Officer and STEM advocate Nicki Palmer and then engaged in an elevator pitch workshop and an internship discussion. Ninayo habli njema! That’s the Swahili translation for “I have good news,” and it’s true! Dallas ISD Translation Services has expanded the number of languages available to serve district students and parents. American Sign Language, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda and Swahili have been added to Arabic, Burmese, Chin, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish — languages that were already offered by the department. Enrollment records reflect that more than 67 languages are spoken in the homes of district students. Lizbeth Alonso, a student at the Solar Preparatory School for Girls, has many reasons she is thankful to be bilingual and biliterate. For one, knowing two languages is a “mini-superpower” that lets her communicate across cultures. And two, her first-place essay on why she is proud to be bilingual has earned her an all-expense-paid trip to the 2018 National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) conference in New Mexico.
