Shannon Kline, a second-grade teacher at Anson Jones Elementary School, was surprised with a $10,000 check after being named a recipient of the Sanford Teacher Awards. Kline was one of five inaugural awardees who demonstrate the qualities of inspiring teaching. Sanford Programs and the National University System hosted the awards. After being surprised with the award, Kline teared up and thanked her fantastic students. “This is my inspiration right here,” she said, pointing to the students. “These kids are my heart.” Go here to see video of Kline being surprised with the award.

Dallas ISD students are dancing through barriers thanks to a special opportunity. Dancing Classrooms uses ballroom dancing to help teach emotional intelligence and enhance social and academic success among participants. The State Board of Education named Marnie Glaser, a Dallas ISD parent and volunteer, as a recipient of its Heroes for Children Award. The State Board of Education (SBOE) selected one outstanding volunteer from each board district to honor with the award. Whether it was painting a mural herself by the school’s front door or creating an outdoor science courtyard complete with koi pond, flower garden and pergola, Glaser last year worked to make Preston Hollow Elementary School a child-centered environment with a strong literacy culture. More than 2,300 students and their parents attended the 2018 Dallas ISD Districtwide College Fair on Sept. 19 to learn about opportunities available after high school graduation. That attendance figure represents more than 1,800 Dallas ISD students, nearly 50 more who attend schools outside of Dallas ISD and the about 400 parents/guardians who also visited the fair. When they arrived, they were greeted by dozens of representatives from colleges, universities, trade schools and the military who were eager to share information about their institutions.
