When boredom strikes and there’s a sewing machine around, it’s amazing what can happen. At least that was the case for Ty’Viana (Ty) W., a junior at Lincoln High School and a member of the school’s Purple Flash dance team. As an eighth-grader in 2020 when the pandemic struck, Ty said, “I was randomly scrolling on Google and came across the term fashion designer, researched it, and decided that’s what I wanted to do with my life.” When she shared her plan with her parents, they immediately went to buy her a sewing machine, investing in her creativity. New for the 2024-2025 school year, Dallas ISD will offer students an opportunity to join a Firefighter Academy at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School of Innovation. The first-of-its-kind program includes a curriculum where students finish their high school degree while simultaneously earning industry-recognized certifications to become a firefighter. Students can apply for this program now through January 31. At the core of Roosevelt’s curriculum are the values: safety, teamwork, and community engagement. Lakita Dockery remembers being in her teens walking the hallways of W.T. White as captain of the volleyball team. Fifteen years later, she’s now Coach Dockery and is in awe of how the school has evolved. The words “Longhorn Pride” are painted on several walls, reminding her of the immense honor it will be to lead the varsity volleyball team to victory at the state playoffs next month. The Dallas ISD Police Department is helping parents and students make the most of their trick-or-treating adventures while keeping safety a top priority. Below are their top five tips for a fun-filled and safe evening, Trick-or-treating is safer, not to mention more fun, in groups. Kids under age 12 should be joined by adults for trick-or-treating. Get together with other adults and make an evening of it. Bring cellphones for quick pictures and emergencies, but leave them in your pockets to avoid getting distracted. Slow down and be alert.
