The Dallas ISD Office of Family and Community Engagement is hosting multiple free parent workshops this fall. All district families are invited to the workshops, where Spanish interpretation will be provided. It’s Tuesday morning at Billy Earl Dade Middle School, and Sen. Royce West is leading students in singing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” The song starts softly, but by the chorus, West and the students are hitting notes that would make the King of Pop proud. West and Dale Long, the community outreach coordinator and Public Information Officer for the City of Dallas Public Works Department, are serving as Principals for the Day at the Dallas ISD middle school. A great educational strategy doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. For Dallas ISD, one new strategy revolves around a simple phrase: “Always speak in complete sentences.” And while the effort to promote pre-K and early elementary students to speak in complete sentences seems simple, Alan Cohen, who oversees early childhood education for the district, said the strategy could bring significant benefits. “Getting our kids to speak in complete sentences will do great things for their oral language development, which is a critical building block of literacy development,” Cohen said. “It’s really important that we take a holistic approach…
