Three Dallas ISD schools nominated for Blue Ribbon status

Three Dallas ISD schools have been nominated for the national 2017 Blue Ribbon Schools award. The middle schools at both Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) and Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, as well as the Dallas Environmental Science Academy (DESA), are the Dallas ISD nominees. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced that 26 Texas public schools have received nominations. The prestigious award is a program of the U.S. Department of Education and recognizes exemplary schools where students are performing at high levels. Students to honor MLK Jr.’s legacy at finals of annual oratory competition (video)

The Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition is designed to highlight the cultural diversity of the community while recognizing and encouraging the writing and presentation skills of Dallas ISD students. The eight Dallas ISD finalists will compete in the finals on Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m–12:30 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre downtown Dallas. Application window open for Two-Way Dual-Language program

Dallas ISD’s Two-Way Dual-Language program creates global citizens every day by providing students with the opportunity to learn two languages. The application window for a student to enroll in the Two-Way Dual-Language program is open through Jan. 31. In the program, English speakers can learn Spanish and Spanish speakers can learn English. Rhonda Edmundson is a parent of sixth-grade twins who’ve attended a Two-Way Dual-Language program since early childhood. Hillcrest High School community to receive bond program updates on Jan. 10

On Tuesday, January 10, parents and community members served by Hillcrest High School will have another opportunity to review the bond program improvements planned for their school. A community meeting is set for the campus at 6 p.m., Jan. 10, as a follow up to an initial feedback session held in August. Bond program architects and project managers are holding similar meetings at schools across the district to check in with stakeholders.
