South Oak Cliff High School credits enrollment jump to excellent academics, community support
0On the way to her afternoon class, junior Kendell Cole asks South Oak Cliff High School Principal Willie Johnson what she needs to join the swim team. Cole transferred from Crandall High School to SOC, and she is interested in bringing her significant swimming skills to the Golden Bears. Cole is one of more than 200 additional new students to start at SOC this year, which has seen its enrollment climb from 1,096 last school year to 1,322 this month. 0Dallas ISD graduate Macario Hernandez was working with teens in the juvenile offender system when he found a calling for teaching. “It really feels that my inspiration to become a teacher was my way of finding a profession that I could give back to my community,” he said. “Education is what offered me that dream.” Hernandez enrolled in the Dallas ISD Alternative Certification Program (ACP), which trains college graduates who studied a career outside of teaching to follow their passion and lead a classroom. Dallas ISD’s Local Accountability System holds schools to a higher standard than TEA
0The Texas Education Agency’s rating of Dallas ISD with an overall grade of B reflects a score of 86 out of 100 — a five-point improvement over the district’s 2018 rating of B. The TEA’s new A-F rating system measures such factors as student achievement, school progress/growth and how well schools perform at closing academic gaps between various populations of students. It’s important to know that Dallas ISD’s homegrown rating system – the Local Accountability System for Campus Success – applies a more robust standard for assessing schools than that applied by the state.
