Every year, the federal government and the State of Texas allocate hundreds of millions of dollars in grants and loans for college students. Students who plan to attend a college or university during the 2020-2021 academic year can request funds to pay for higher-ed costs by submitting two forms: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). More than 1,500 alumni, current students and neighbors of South Oak Cliff High School joined dozens of district and elected officials for Saturday’s ribbon-cutting held to celebrate the formal opening of the renovated campus. Gold and white outfits emblazoned with the well-known SOC initials were everywhere as supporters greeted former faculty and classmates, took selfies with the storied golden bear in the school lobby, and wandered the halls to gaze at the dozens of athletic trophies and reminisce about their years at the school, originally constructed in 1949. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said Dallas ISD is immediately implementing new protocols following a Jan. 11 shooting at a district basketball game. Effective Jan. 13–17, bags, purses and backpacks will not be allowed into sporting events. Starting Jan. 20 only clear bags will be allowed into sporting events. The district will also use wand metal detectors as people enter district sporting events. In addition to improving aging school facilities across the district, a proposal could leverage a 2020 bond election to address longtime historical inequities in neighborhoods that were redlined and segregated decades ago. Sobering data shows how redlining–which was the historical practice of denying access of services to certain races or ethnicities living in certain areas–directly correlates to current areas of high poverty and high needs in the City of Dallas.
