Juneteenth National Independence Day becomes an official Dallas ISD holiday

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the emancipation of slaves on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, following the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued two years earlier. Several states, including Texas, still practiced slavery despite the emancipation in 1963 until federal troops arrived in Galveston to bring word of then President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation. Juneteenth, traditionally a Texas holiday, has gained more and more prominence among African Americans at the national level as Emancipation Day, leading to the signing of the bill by President Joe Biden that officially makes it a federal holiday. Walk into the Summer Breeze camp at Bayles Elementary School, and Jason can’t wait to show you his Super Boat that floats in air. Touch a button, and a big hook with a worm drops down into water. Granted, the boat is made of popsicle sticks and string, and the dropping hook is a work in progress. As expected, the recently released STAAR data shows the pandemic negatively impacted student learning, both across the state and in Dallas ISD. Meanwhile, Dallas ISD leaders say a comprehensive approach to address the learning loss caused by the pandemic will help set up students for future success. Kaiyah Jones spent her senior year excelling academically, at work, at track and at motherhood. Despite working past midnight on a regular basis, the recent W.T.
