No matter what was on the lunch menu, seniors at Thomas Jefferson High School had a once-in-a-lifetime serving of Meat Loaf on Friday, March 6. The famous actor and musician returned to his alma mater, along with three fellow TJ grads, to receive Distinguished Alumni Awards from the school’s alumni association. Meat Loaf, known in school as Michael Aday, got his start in acting on the very stage he was standing on Friday. The March 6 groundbreaking ceremony for Jose “Joe” May Elementary School attracted school and government officials, parents and students who wore lots of smiles. The event, marking the beginning of construction for the 100,000-square-foot school, was held at Francisco “Pancho” Medrano Middle School due to inclement weather. May Elementary is the last school to be built with funds from Dallas ISD’s 2008 Bond Program, and will serve 800 students in grades Pre-K through 5. As multiple TV critics have pointed out, “Empire,” a drama on Fox, is the biggest TV success in recent memory. Wendy Calhoun, the show’s co-executive producer/writer, is the driving force behind “Empire.” Also, it’s worth noting that Calhoun is a Dallas native who graduated from Booker T. Washington. Following the internal air quality incident at Lakewood Elementary this week, Dallas ISD installed a carbon monoxide detector at the school. The detector in the school’s boiler room ties into into the school’s alarm system, providing a direct notification if carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level. The district is in preliminary efforts to install such carbon monoxide monitors at all other Dallas ISD schools, spokesman André Riley said. This effort is in preliminary stages and has not been finalized.
