In a few short weeks when classes end for the summer, Charles A. Gill Elementary Assistant Principal Carlos Walcott will pack his bags for what might be considered an unusual study trip. While some colleagues use the summer to seek rest and relaxation or review test data in preparation for the next school year, Walcott will devote a week to an altogether different line of study. The Dallas Independent School District is among six large school districts nationwide that will start rolling out the use of compostable round plates at cafeterias this month, saying good-bye to polystyrene trays. The new lunch trays will allow students to eat their food off of plates like they do at home, replacing the institutional rectangular lunch tray. As importantly, the new trays are produced from pre-consumer recycled newsprint and will be composted, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Educating the 160,000 students in Dallas ISD requires nearly 12,000 teachers. The Human Capital Management department has been charged with placing an effective teacher in every classroom by the start of the 2015-2016 school year. With the May 30 teacher job fair on the horizon, that goal is squarely within reach. “We’ve had a great recruiting and hiring season so far,” said Dallas ISD Talent Leader Jordan Carlton. “We’ve issued around 800 early contracts and over 1,000 teachers have already received job offers, so we’re very close to our goal.” The majority of remaining openings are in critical needs areas,…

Recently the students, parents, alumni and community members gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Dallas ISD’s Stonewall Jackson Elementary School. The program was a retrospective of every decade since the school opened in 1939, performed by the students of Stonewall. Parents helped out with wardrobe, props, and hugs.  Several past principals were on hand to reminisce about the school’s long rich history.
