A new educational tool developed in partnership with nonprofit Big Thought is taking the midway, livestock, food and Big Tex to classrooms this fall. The curriculum uses aspects of the State Fair of Texas to teach students in grades 4-8 lessons in math, science, language arts, art and social studies. Shelia Lyons, a sixth-grade math teacher at Dallas ISD’s John B. Hood Middle school, is among teachers using the curriculum in her classes. Check out the story from CBS DFW here.

When Dallas ISD learned this time last year that five students had been exposed to the Ebola virus, school nurses were among the individuals who stepped up to help guide the district through the crisis. Withers Elementary students are in the final stretch of preparing for the annual Wildcat Prowl 5k and Fun Run coming up on Saturday, Oct. 3. For the third year, the school is trading in the traditional cookie dough fundraiser for a healthy alternative. All month in September, the school’s students trained for the run before (6:45 a.m.) and after school. Parent volunteers led the students through fun stretching, running and conditioning drills and obstacle courses. In October, student-athletes at Bryan Adams High School will attempt to raise $10,000 for the fight against childhood cancer. According to a statement from Go4theGoal’s Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer campaign, the high school is raising money at donate.go4thegoal.org/bryanadams. The school’s goal is to raise $10,000. Teams will also be wearing shoelaces during games that are gold, the color for childhood cancer awareness, during their games. September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The new head of Special Education, Tanya Browne, has come full circle in her career. The journalist-turned-educator started out in a Dallas ISD classroom in 1993. She later became a dean and associate principal before joining the Special Education department, first as supervisor of secondary programs and then director of curriculum and instruction. W.H. Adamson Band Director Chris Green got the surprise of his life last month when the school gathered for a top-secret assembly during which Green learned he was a finalist for the Farmers Insurance Thank Americas Teachers grant where he could win $100,000. The band program at Adamson has grown from having 12 students to more than 200 in the past five years. The grant would purchase band equipment so that every student has an instrument to play.
