Let’s hear it for the boys! The Lincoln Tigers Boys Basketball team, that is. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized the “comeback kids” for claiming a state title in San Antonio earlier this month. The Tigers claimed their last title in 2002 when they finished the season 40-0. That team featured a college-bound cast of talent, including Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat. A record number of students at Carter High School have received full-ride scholarships to attend Texas Christian University. Six seniors at Carter were awarded the TCU Community Scholarships, each valued at more than $250,000, at a ceremony on Thursday. Tissues were passed out freely as the scholarship recipients, their families, classmates, teachers and staff cried in joy throughout the ceremony. It rained hard the night before, but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm surrounding a new learning garden at Dan D. Rogers Elementary. Nonprofit REAL School Gardens, along with corporate partners Texas Instruments, Fossil Group and FedEx, joined students, teachers and staff to install the new garden on Thursday, March 24. Principal Lisa Lovato said the garden will bring to life lessons in science, mathematics and engineering, possibly planting the seeds of future careers – even jobs that don’t yet exist. Dallas ISD has 14 finalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students have a chance at the 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $32 million. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Each year, approximately 1.5 million students undergo PSAT/NMSQT tests. Of those, approximately 15,000 become finalists. J.L Long Middle School janitor Enrique Mendez has been named a finalist for a nationwide Janitor of the Year contest. Sponsored by Cintas Corporation, the contest aims to recognize the best-of-the-best in school janitors. Mendez is one of 10 finalists competing for a $5,000 cash prize along with $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid products and services for his or her school—not to mention bragging rights. Mendez often works 12-hour days and even some weekends in order to keep the school in tip-top shape, according to Cintas. Urban Park Elementary staff, teachers, and parents worked together to put on an out-of-this-world STAAR pep rally for the school’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders on Wednesday. The rally, which aimed to motivate the students taking the first round of STAAR exams next week,  started with the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders parading across the front of the school as younger schoolmates cheered “si se puede” and “may the scores be with you!” Meanwhile, the Skyline High School drumline performed high-energy arrangements that had students dancing and nodding their heads.
