Target and DonorsChoose.org are teaming up to support teacher- and student-driven classroom projects. Through a partnership with DonorsChoose.org, a non-profit dedicated to engaging the public to fund K-12 public school projects, Target will invest up to $5 million, reach up to 200,000 students nationwide and bring to life their ideas to promote healthy eating and increase physical activity. Examples include a school vegetable garden planted and tended by kids or playground improvements that focus on fitness and fun. Substitute teachers in Dallas ISD can earn more money this school year. The district has raised the daily per diem for substitute teachers who have a college degree—which is the majority of substitute teachers—from $75 per day to $85 per day. Meanwhile, certified teachers who substitute teach in Dallas ISD will now make $95 per day, which is up from $90 per day. Additionally, a person who has completed 60 college hours or an associate degree can now substitute teach in Dallas ISD; in short-term assignments. Aside from school supplies, school uniforms are a primary need for many students going into the new school year. Families of students in preK–eighth grade in need of uniform assistance can contact their campus’ uniform coordinator for help in obtaining a uniform. Parents requesting uniform assistance must meet income eligibility guidelines and complete the Socioeconomic Information form to determine their eligibility. They also must fill out the Uniform Assistance Program application. Both forms are provided by their campus’ uniform coordinator and returned to that coordinator once they are completed. Most Dallas ISD students entering kindergarten through 12th grade may register for school using the district’s online enrollment tool now through Sept. 2. Parents are encouraged to enroll their children online before the start of the 2016-2017 school year on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016. Online enrollment allows parents to skip long lines and avoid filling out paper forms at their child’s campus. Online enrollment is a convenient option, but not mandatory. About 100 Dallas ISD high school students enrolled in a NAF Academy served as paid interns at prestigious companies over the summer. The interns—who worked at companies such as Verizon, Capital One, KPMG, and HPE—were eligible to earn a NAFTrack Certification as part of the internship process. The certification could be a gateway to full-time employment. At the end of July, the companies hosted graduation ceremonies to recognize the students’ hard work.
