The Lone Star State School Counseling Association (LSSSCA) recently recognized 12 Dallas ISD schools for receiving the 2016 Lone Star State Award. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, LSSSCA recognized 37 schools around the state of Texas for implementing outstanding school counseling programs. Counselors in the selected schools exhibited excellence in advocacy, leadership, collaboration, and systemic change as supported by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. The Rotary Club of Dallas is accepting teacher applications for its annual Service Above Self Awards through April 17th. The awards recognize teachers who strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others through demonstrated Service Above Self and who go above and beyond the call of duty. Sixteen campuses have advanced to the next round in the NCAA’s Read to the Final Four contest for Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) third-graders. The bracket-style reading competition is similar to the NCAA Final Four tournament schedule, with schools advancing based on how many minutes students read outside school hours. Since reading efforts began in November, Dallas ISD third-graders have read a total of 521,411 minutes. Ann Richards Middle School held an “On Track” brunch to celebrate its more than 300 eighth-graders who are on track to go on to high school next school year. The students in the Class of 2021 celebrated at the brunch have maintained satisfactory academics, behavior and attendance so far this school year. The African American Success Initiative sponsored a team of three young men from Mark Twain Elementary to participate in the African American Male Academic Bowl. The competition was held Saturday, Jan. 28, and the Mark Twain Elementary team won the elementary school division! Third-graders at Charles A. Gill Elementary School have created, marketed, and sold their own board game to benefit the school’s Parent Teacher Association.
