Dallas ISD’s science department offers a variety of opportunities for teachers to build confidence levels through targeted professional development. Differentiated sessions are geared towards increasing content knowledge and student-centered pedagogy skills in an inquiry-based setting. School starts on Monday, which, of course, also means that school zones will be in effect for motorists. The total fine for speeding in a school zone starts at $221. Also, all drivers are still prohibited from texting or using handheld cell phones while driving in a school zone. Drivers are encouraged to observe speed zones when flashing light signals are active, and to be aware of students walking near schools.

Teachers and administrators from the seven Acellerating Campus Excellence (ACE) campuses were back in school a week early to participate in trainings designed to give them new strategies for classroom success. Dallas ISD will set up a back-to-school hotline to answer concerns and questions that arise during the first week of classes, starting Monday, Aug. 22, the first day of school. The parent hotline will address school-related concerns and ease the confusion often associated with the first week of school. Parents may call the hotline at (972) 925-5437 (KIDS) on Monday, Aug. 22, through Friday, Aug. 26, to receive information about enrollment, bus routes, immunization requirements, school location, hours of operation, and more. Results are back from the state’s 2016 STAAR 3-8 and STAAR End of Course (EOC) exams. Transformation Schools and Innovation Schools, which are under the district’s Public School Choice (PSC) initiative, showed overall positive gains in student achievement. Eight Dallas Independent School District campuses are among 500 high schools nationwide honored by Newsweek for preparing students at an economic disadvantage for college.
