The boys basketball teams at Skyline and Madison high schools have both advanced to the UIL State Basketball Championships. The teams will compete in the State Semifinals being held March 9-11 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The teams advanced in the regional tournaments held earlier in the month. The games are scheduled for: 3A State Semifinals – Thursday, March 9 Madison High School vs. Santa Rosa High School 1:30 p.m. 6A State Semifinals – Friday, March 10 Skyline High School vs Cypress Falls High School 7:00 p.m.

Research resonates in the minds of all of the students at Anne Frank Elementary School thanks to its bustling annual GT Research Fair hosted by first- through fifth-grade students and GT teacher Jeni Baldwin. More than 130 students presented projects ranging on subjects as diverse as immigration and the Holocaust to parakeets and emojis. The Dallas Area Regional History Day contest was held Saturday, Feb. 18, at Townview Center. Students participated from the Dallas, Sunnyvale, Highland Park, Plano, Hockaday and Mesquite School Districts. More than 300 students from 27 schools competed with 204 entries on topics related to this year’s theme “Taking a Stand” in history. On Saturday, March 4, Read for Me, Dallas ISD’s culminating event for Dallas Reads, celebrated literacy with keynote speakers, book-centered activities, celebrity authors, and more. Dallas Reads is the Language and Literacy initiative that highlights the importance of literacy through community partnerships and interactive events throughout the year. Read for Me was a free event that featured literacy sessions for students of all ages and their families from across the district and the metroplex. Students have until Sunday, March 12, to apply for a Stars on the Rise scholarship, which is provided by the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. For 34 years, Stars on the Rise has given millions of dollars to talented students who can’t afford college. Stars on the Rise scholarships are open to all high school seniors regardless of ethnicity or immigration status. Skyline High School’s cosmetology program has been helping students find beautiful futures since 1972. Instructor Sheryl Landman said students become licensed cosmetologists in their senior year, earning them experience and income. She works to place them in a job and monitor their progress for a year until they graduate. Working closely with salons in the community pays off every year. “My job is really easy because they start calling me in April and May and saying, ‘How many students do you have?
