Dallas ISD’s Billy Earl Dade Middle School capped off its homecoming week with a special event focusing on another big football game – Texas-OU. The Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl draws the biggest crowds to the State Fair of Texas each year. Rep. District officials, parents, community members and representatives from organizations partnering with the new Solar Preparatory School for Girls celebrated the school’s opening on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The school launched in August in the former James Bonham Elementary School building on Henderson Avenue. This year, the school serves girls in kindergarten through second grade. Each subsequent year will add a grade, ultimately making the school a K-8 campus. Dallas ISD employees and students fanned out last night to cheer on the Dallas Mavericks as they took on the Charlotte Hornets in a pre-season matchup. Although the Mavs fell short of victory, the Dallas ISD Friends and Family Night was a hit as staff and students came out in droves to take a break from their nightly routine and enjoy a night out with the family to support the hometown team. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To increase the public’s awareness of domestic violence, the city and school district are joining forces to provide education and activities to get people involved in prevention. Statistics supplied by the Dallas Domestic Violence Taskforce indicate that nearly 20 people in the U.S. are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute with a sometimes deadly toll on families, children and communities. Today, Dallas County Elections Administrator, Toni Pippins-Poole reminded Texans that voters who cannot obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID now have additional options when voting in person. “My office is working to make sure all the voters in Dallas County are ready to cast a ballot,” said Pippins-Poole. “These new options for voters who cannot obtain photo ID are currently in place and will be used in the November Election.” As provided by a court order, if a voter has a reasonable impediment to obtaining one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may…

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch visited Dallas ISD’s Sunset High School on Monday, Oct. 3, to talk about the type of community policing that outgoing Dallas Police Chief David Brown implemented during his tenure. Lynch also announced the kickoff of a new $119 million grant program for police departments across the country. The Dallas department will receive $3.1 million in grant funds to hire 25 additional officers.
